Why Open Source

Open Source Software (OSS) is provided with a license that gives the end user the right to use it with complete (not free of cost always) for private or commercial use. OSS comprises of features such as the users' right to a) inspect and modify the underlying source code, b) sell or distribute original or modified version of OSS, c) distribute the modified source code for others' benefit.

As a developing country, Bangladesh has been long experiencing the glimpse of Open Source Software in a very limited and narrow exposure especially with the sight of Linux, PHP and MySQL mostly. In contrast, the original Proprietorship software costs more than twice the cost of one high performing personal computer, which in real sense, a country like Bangladesh can no way afford or depend on. With the forthcoming enactment of ICT Act 2006 that legally restricts the use of pirated proprietorship software, the computer users in Bangladesh would really and legally have to depend on the use of Open Source Software extensively. As opposed to the expensive proprietorship software, it is now high time that an organized project based effort to mobilize the open source software, develop local contents development, and localize open source applications to gradually build an information society in Bangladesh.

BdOSN Monthly Talk - Searching life in outer space:The Open approach

Image cannot be displayed
The form of life in outer space may be different, they may look like alien, may have a very big head compare to body or may have only head! Who knows? But if they are intelligent enough then they must know how to transmit and receive radio signal. This is the motto of the searching extraterrestrial intelligence in the SETI project. The open model of the SETI@Home project allowed people from different corner of the world to collaborate, to analyze the huge amount of data in a distributed computing environment. All the above were revealed in the monthly talk of BdOSN on 28th, June 2008. The talk was held in FREPD auditorium. Mr Omar Shehab and Ms Sabila Enun, both the core members of BdOSN delivered their talks on the open model of collaboration and computing.
