On 17th July 2023, Science and Mathematics sessions were conducted at Shaheed Ali Ahmed Govt Girls High School, Tala, Satkhira, under the STEM & ICT Skills for the Girls of Coastal Area (SISGCA) project funded by Malala Fund in association with BdOSN. 68 students from classes 6 to 8 participated actively in these sessions.
The main objectives of this SISGCA project are - Reducing disparity in digital device use (mainly by girls in coastal areas), Enhancing students' problem-solving abilities through exceptional ways of learning, reinforcing foundational concepts that will serve as a strong base for their future science-related queries, engaging and educating students in the fascination of Science and Technology, promoting a positive attitude towards the subjects. To assist them in becoming skilled for the future workplace.
The sessions were started with a welcome note by Alok Kumar Tarafdar, Head Teacher Shaheed Ali Ahmed Govt Girls High School. Then Shajib Kumar Borman, Project Coordinator, SISGCA, briefed the session objectives and goals. After that, Turab Haque Payel, Academic Coordinator, Bangladesh Mathematics Olympiad, utilize interactive teaching methods and group activities to make learning math enjoyable and engaging, fostering a positive learning environment. Foster a curiosity and passion for mathematics, encouraging students to explore the subject beyond the classroom and nurturing a lifelong appreciation for learning.
Then Md. Mainul Hoque, Academic Team Member, MASLab, conducted a hands-on based practical science session. He initiated the properties of lights one by one. Reflection, refraction, total internal reflection, movement of light, uses of light, and light beam properties were described with regular days available materials. Students were amazed by seeing the seven color bands of light. How submarine works was described by handmade periscope. All the students experienced it on their own.
By the end of this session, students should feel more eager to learn their studies in a different way and possess a positive attitude and a positive attitude towards the subjects also, some books were gifted to the students by the project to boost their motivation.
